Japan's Abe announces resignation(Financial Times)
Shinzo Abe on Wednesday plunged Japan into political crisis by announcing his resignation only two days after parliament reconvened for an extraordinary session. Mr Abe, who refused to quit after July's disastrous defeat in upper house elections, said he had decided to resign on Wednesday because lack of public trust made passage of an anti-terror law extremely difficult. The prime minister, who called an emergency press conference to announce his decision, said he had sought a compromise with the opposition but that Ichiro Ozawa, leader of the Democratic Party of Japan, had refused to see him. Mr Ozawa later denied any such meeting had been requested.
Jesper Koll, president of Tantallon Research Japan, part of an Asian hedge fund, said he was baffled by the timing of Mr Abe's resignation. Referring to the samurai code of honour and bravery that Mr Abe has sometimes invoked during his premiership, he said: "This is not bushido. This is chicken."

Japan's prime minister steps down(Los Angeles Times)
TOKYO -- A weary-looking Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced today that he would quit his office, saying he lacked the necessary support to pursue the agenda that drove his political career. His announcement, delivered in a rambling, nationally televised press conference, came as a surprise.
It was a dismal end to an administration that began with high hopes for Abe, the first Japanese prime minister born after World War II and a leader who was supposed to turn history's page on the national reticence that defined Japan's post-war era. But after a promising start that included a rapprochement with China, Abe's government sank into chaos and confusion wrought by scandals and verbal gaffes. Abe will be able to claim small successes in his nationalist agenda, from revising Japan's basic education law to reflect a more patriotic spirit, to elevating the country's defense establishment to full ministerial rank. But his grander ambitions of reforming Japan's pacifist Constitution foundered as his government, almost from the start, was repeatedly wounded by scandals.

Japanese Premier, Losing Support, Resigns(New York Times)
TOKYO, Sept. 12 - Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the nationalist leader whose vision of an unapologetic and strong Japan foundered on scandals, incompetence and gaffes, announced abruptly today that he would step down. In a hastily called news conference, Mr. Abe acknowledged that he had lost the public's trust and said he hoped that a new leader would be better able to carry out his policies, including continuing the Japanese military's participation in the war in Afghanistan. The deeply unpopular Mr. Abe had already been written off by Japan's political establishment and media, his political future measured in months. But the timing of the resignation nevertheless stunned Japan. It drew accusations of irresponsibility from inside and outside his party, and threw the country's already tense political situation into further disarray.
Possibly to deflect criticism of the sudden resignation, party officials said that Mr. Abe, 52, the first prime minister born after World War II, was suffering from poor health, though they provided no details.
But the Japanese government has released few details about the nature of its assistance to the United States military, leading many opposition politicians to suggest that Japanese troops are in fact violating the Constitution. Opposition politicians have suggested that Japan has refueled American vessels that were involved, not in Afghanistan, but in Iraq. In addition, they have said that Japan's air force - which has been transporting American troops between Kuwait and Baghdad- has clearly overstepped its stated mission of engaging in humanitarian activities. Opposition politicians are expected to use their new power in the upper house of Parliament to demand more information about these military missions.

Embattled Japanese Premier Announces His Resignation(Washington Post)
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced Wednesday he would resign, ending a year-old government that has suffered a string of damaging scandals and a humiliating electoral defeat.
Abe's resignation marks a rapid fall from power for a prime minister who came into office a year ago with ambitious plans to repair frayed relations with Asian neighbors, revise the 1947 pacifist constitution, and bolster Japan's role in international diplomatic and military affairs.

TOKYO (AP) -- Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced Wednesday he will resign, ending a troubled year-old government that has suffered a string of damaging scandals and a humiliating electoral defeat. Abe said he was quitting to pave the way for ruling and opposition parties to work together to approve the extension of Tokyo's naval mission in support of the U.S.-led operation in Afghanistan. "In the present situation it is difficult to push ahead with effective policies that win the support and trust of the public," Abe said in a nationally televised news conference. "I have decided that we need a change in this situation." Abe, a nationalist whose support rating has plunged to 30 percent, also cited the ruling party's defeat in July 29 elections, in which the opposition took control of the upper house of Parliament.

Japanese prime minister resigns(BBC News)
Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has announced he is resigning as Japan's prime minister after a bruising election in July and poor poll ratings. Mr Abe had faced growing calls to go since his Liberal Democrats lost the upper house but had held out, insisting he wanted to push through reforms. He went on TV to say Japan needed a new leader to "fight against terrorism".
Mr Abe, who is seen as a nationalist, took over as prime minister a year ago. At 52, he was Japan's youngest post-war head of government. But his poll ratings plummeted amid a row over pensions and a series of financial scandals involving cabinet ministers.
Cabinet-level resignations and the disastrous defeat at the recent upper house elections left Mr Abe unable to gain momentum on any of his major policies. But despite his many problems, his resignation still deals a heavy blow to the Liberal Democrats.

Out goes Abe(ECONOMIST)
Japan's unimpressive prime minister, Shinzo Abe, quits
BOWING to the inevitable, but with surprising timing, Shinzo Abe announced his resignation as Japan's prime minister on Wednesday September 12th, just under a year after coming to office. The grandson of a famous post-war prime minister and son of a foreign minister, Mr Abe had his whole life been groomed to be prime minister-not least by his domineering mother, who last year insisted that he bid for his party's leadership while grandees of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) were urging him to bide his time.
Worse, he had a tin ear for the political mood. Voters, it turned out, were not in fact keen on cost-cutting and structural reform, which entailed pain and uncertainty, particularly in rural regions and among the old. Mr Abe, uninterested in domestic policy, failed to reassure them.
